If I rank the awesomeness of our months so far in Alaska, May will certainly be near the top of the list. May 2023 for BB and I was jammed packed with visitors, trips and outings.
BB and I began inviting friends and family to visit us in Alaska while we were still in Virginia. We hoped they would take advantage of the invitation and recognize that we were sincere in offering it. We fielded several inquiries regarding the best time to come. When to come was actually a hard one to answer. First thought was to tell visitors to come in the summer when the weather is best and the sun is out until the middle of the night. However, winter in Anchorage is when Fur Rondy and Iditarod activities take place. We ended up telling people when we would be away from Anchorage and where we were going. We advised them to join us if what we were doing interested them or else to visit us when we were scheduled to be home.
Interesting how things turn out. We had seven visitors in May!
Who was in Alaska when?
John: May 16 to June 1
Kate: May 27 to June 3
Pat, Carol, Nora: May 31 to June 12 (Nora arrives June 3)
We went LOTS of places!
May 16: BB and Sal meet John in Vancouver.
May 17 to May 24: Onboard the Sapphire Princess to cruise the inside passage. Fran and Bev join us.
May 25: BB, Sal and John visit Hatcher Pass
May 28 to May 29: BB, Sal, John and Kate are in Seward
May 30: BB, Sal, John and Kate day trip to Wasilla and Talkeetna
June 2: BB, Sal, Kate, Carol and Pat day trip to the Alaska Wildlife Conservations Center and Girdwood
And did LOTS of things!
THE CRUISE: The Sapphira Princess stopped at Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway and cruised through Glacier Bay National Park. Onboard activities included Trivia Contests, wine tastings and evening entertainment shows.
SEWARD: Our time in Seward included visiting Kenai Fjords National Park and a 6 hour Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise.
MAT-SU VALLY: On our day trip in the Mat-Su Valley we visited Iditarod Headquarters in Wasilla, Martin Busar's Happy Trails Kennel in Big Lake and wandered the town of Talkeetna.
ANCHORAGE: Meals at 49th State, Moose's Tooth, Spenard Roadhouse and the Spenard Food Truck Carnival. Visits to the Alaska Native Heritage Center, Alaska Public Lands Visitor Center, Anchorage Distillery and Lake Hood Seaplane Base. Walks around University Lake and on the Tony Knowles Coastal trail.
