Believe it or not, yesterday we saw the World’s Largest Beaver statue and almost saw the Worlds Largest Golf Ball. The beaver was on the highway in Beaverlodge AB. I took a quick window picture then googled it. Sure enough, largest beaver. The golf ball was listed in our Milepost book as being in Taylor, British Columbia. At this point, we feel we have started a collection, so we made a very minor detour, only to learn it had been removed not too long ago. I can hardly wait to see what enlarged item we stumble across today. Could we be so lucky?
We entered the Alaska Highway this afternoon. Mile 0 is in Dawson Creed BC, and after taking many selfies commemorating the occasion, we headed north. So far, the highway is pretty much like any other two-lane road. We understand it might get rougher as we get further along, but no problems so far. It’s really pretty. We are bordering the Northern Rockies but not driving through mountains yet. All is really green. We are in moose and bear country and are on the lookout, but we have only seen some ravens and pretty (dove gray with coral beaks) heron-type birds. Today the Milepost books warns of Buffalo in the area. It would be a thrill to see some wildlife. Sal saw a deer yesterday. Wah wah.
We drove further than anticipated because our scheduled stay for the night, upon closer inspection, didn’t seem the right fit for us. The man at the gas station described it as a man den for workers on the highway and gas/oil lines, plus there was no air conditioning and the room was hot, hot, hot, plus there was a dark brown bedspread which for some reason freaked me out. So, two hours later, we arrived at Fort Nelson in a regular hotel room. Sal is a trooper and great sister.
We went through another time change, so we are 3 hours behind Richmond. The longer drive yesterday means a shorter drive today, so we are chilling a bit this morning. Sal is marking up the Milepost book for places we might want to stop and check out. All is good here in Fort Nelson.
