Nothing much happened Wednesday It was a pleasant drive with some pretty sections, but not beautiful scenery like yesterday. No animals, but a few large boulders that got us excited for a moment. We stopped for lunch in Whitehorse, which was a much larger town than we had expected, around 25,000. (As comparison, last night in Haines Junction, the population is around 800, and it’s a larger community than most we’ve been driving through.) We preordered a nice lunch, picked it us when we arrived, found a parking meter with some time on it and ate in the car.
It started raining in early afternoon, and we were pleasantly surprised to see it washed many of the bug splatters from the car.
Haines Junction is the gateway to Kluane National Park and Reserve, which, along with Saint Elias Mountains and other surrounding ranges, is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area, with its mountains (including the highest mountain in Canada) and glaciers, is supposed to be spectacular. However, the rain brought a heavy fog, and this was our view. Hopefully we get some views today.
We’re told the road between here and Tok, Alaska will be rough. We’ll take it slow and try to avoid potholes and frost heaves ahead.
In any case, today will be a good day. We cross another border, back into the US. Into Alaska.
